The transformation of the ideally located Chateau de Berne has been ongoing since 2014 with the current works involving an extension to the hotel buildings and the restoration of the castle itself. Alexandre Lafourcade has hugely enhanced this famous Relais & Châteaux property, magnifying its historic presence in the Mediterranean countryside. Dominique Lafourcade has created four hectares of gardens which communicate with the buildings while naturally integrating the bucolic site into the Var landscape.
A farmhouse surrounded by 15 hectares of cultivated land has been transformed into an elegant Provençale mas. Alexandre Lafourcade has redefined all windows and doors and totally reconfigured the interior space. The dramatic modification of the staircase enhances the new-found refinement of the interior which has been decorated in a chic, countrified manner. Dominique has undertaken a garden redesign.
A featureless house in an extraordinary site is always a boon for Alexandre Lafourcade. It is difficult, if not impossible, to make radical changes to an unattractive environment, but someone with the right expertise can totally transform any building. The mas looked like a boat which had been stranded in the countryside, but as the project progressed an entirely new property materialised. The work has included the area around the swimming pool where Alexandre Lafourcade has redefined buildings dedicated to relaxation. Meanwhile, Dominique Lafourcade has created gardens that provide a seamless unity between farmland and village.
